Times Career (p 2)
Old computer geeks are thin on the ground and not enough new ones are being born to replace them, say researchers from the University of Cambridge (Computing, Sept 23). More than 80 per cent of IT staff in the UK are under 45, but the number of under 25s entering the industry has halved since 1995. At the same time, a lack of part-time and flexible working is forcing older people and women out of the profession. This all means that the industry faces a "skills timebomb". IT employers know the theory - recruit from and nurture a broader pool of talent - but few have introduced the practice, the report says.
