Dr. Joanne G. Marshall

Joanne Gard Marshall joined the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as Dean and Professor in January 1999. In July 2004, Joanne will return to the faculty as an Alumni Distinguished Professor. During 2004-2005 she will also serve as President of the Medical Library Association. Prior to 1999, Joanne was a faculty member at the University of Toronto, where she taught courses in health sciences information resources, management of corporate and other specialized information centers, research methods and online information retrieval. In addition to her Ph.D. in public health, Joanne also holds at Master of Health Science Degree from McMaster University and a Master of Library Science degree from McGill University.

Before assuming her faculty appointment at the University of Toronto, Joanne worked for 15 years as a librarian in various academic and health sciences libraries. She has received a number of awards including the Medical Library Association (MLA) doctoral fellowship, the MLA Eliot Prize for the most significant research in medical librarianship for 1982 and 1992, the Award of Outstanding Achievement from the Canadian Health Libraries Association in 1992, the H.W. Wilson Award in 1997, and the John Cotton Dana Award from the Special Libraries Association in 1998. She is a fellow of both the Medical Library Association and the Special Libraries Association. In her spare time, Joanne enjoys yoga and gardening.
